Mini-Suite for Solo Tuba
Composer: Ingram, Charles
Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Tuba
Genre: Contemporaryunaccompanied
I. Praeludium
II. Getting Around
III. Simple Song
IV. Off Waltz
V. Pompous March
VI. Faux Gigue
The Mini Suite for Solo Tuba was composed in 2015 for my good friend Dr. Richard Perry who is the Tuba/Euphonium professor at the University of Southern Mississippi. Dr. Perry was preparing a recital of unaccompanied music for tuba, and he asked me for a new piece.
The structure of the Mini Suite is very loosely based on the idea of the Baroque instrumental suite. While the Baroque suite is based on a series of dances, this one consists of six movements which are fleeting impressions found in the character pieces that are common in the Romantic period. The last movement is the only one that gives the nod to an actual dance found in the traditional Baroque suite.
The first movement, Praeludium, has no programmatic title and serves the purpose of opening the suite.
The second movement, Getting Around, gives the impression of someone who is far too busy to take time for himself until the last measure when he succumbs to exhaustion.
The third movement, Simple Song, is just that; a simple melody that is delivered without any undue fussiness.
The next movement, Off Waltz, is muted throughout and the steady rhythm that embodies the waltz is obscured on several occasions so that the beat is “off”.
The Pompous March hints at a self-important individual strutting his stuff around town and unintentionally making a comical spectacle of himself.
The final movement, Faux Gigue, goes back to the model of the Baroque suite which generally ended with a lively gigue in compound meter. I decided to write this one in three-quarter time as opposed to one of the compound meters. The term faux is a nod to the fact that this piece does not have the contrapuntal texture that is characteristic of the gigue. It also has meter changes that occur here and there which throws the steadiness of the dance out of kilter.

Downloadable - 3 Episodes for Tuba and Piano
Composer: Berry, Andrew
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
Genre: Folk musicwith Piano; This is Andrew Berry’s first completed composition for the two instruments. Though it primarily features the tubist as the solo voice, the pianist plays an important role both melodically and harmonically, truly making the composition a piece of chamber music. Each of the three episodes are entirely “absolute” music. While there is no programmatic inspiration behind the piece, there is melodic and harmonic continuity among the three episodes that allow the performers to tell their own story in the larger context of the piece. Episode I is primarily composed of a-symmetric meters (5/4 and 7/8) with subdivision groupings that are often changing. Along with the jazz-inspired rhythms, this effect creates an imbalance of time that is truly never resolved in the entirety of the movement. Episode II is much like a fantasy, with melodic ideas flowing naturally between the two performers without focusing too heavily on the previous material. The episode is divided into three main sections, each with its own individual mood and pacing. Episode III is the final movement of the piece and acts as a realization of the material from the previous movements. The changing subdivisions in the asymmetric meters are still present, however the melodic material is much more tonal and conclusive in its cadences. Energy and drama build up to the final minute of the piece, where a calm reminiscence of the piece’s opening material transitions into a beautiful final melody from the tubist and conclusion of epic proportions from both performers. 3 Episodes for Tuba and Piano was premiered by Nick Collins (tuba) and Dr. Eric Jenkins (piano) on April 25th, 2021 during Nick’s senior tuba recital at Kennesaw State University. Feierlicher Einzug
Composer: Strauss, Richard Arranger: Bough, Thomas
Instrumentation: Brass Band (British style) Instruments: Bass Trombone, Cornet, Euphonium, Flugelhorn, French Horn, Timpani, Trombone, Tuba
Genre: ClassicalFanfare for the Solemn Procession of the Knights of the Order of St. JohnI am pleased to dedicate this arrangement to the Fox Valley Brass Band. Thanks to a generous donor, this project was completed during the Christmas season of 2019. Thanks also to Jonathan Hauser who suggested this wonderful piece of music as a performance opportunity for our band. Most of all, thanks to the talented and hard-working members of the Fox Valley Brass Band who allow me to conduct this wonderful ensemble. We look forward to performing this work for the very first time in March 22, 2020 at a joint concert with the Des Plaines Park District Community Concert Band, Dr. Allen Legutki, conductor.
The full name of the composition is “Feierlicher Einzug der Ritter des Johanniter-Orderns”, which the Wind Repertory Project web site translates as “Fanfare for the Solemn Procession of the Knights of the Order of St. John.” Program notes from the Northwestern University Symphonic Wind Ensemble point out that Strauss was already a well-known conductor and composer when he wrote this composition in 1909. One of only a handful of his works written exclusively for winds, Strauss’s powerful, majestic composition is scored for 15 trumpets, 4 horns, 4 trombones, 2 tubas and timpani. It was composed for the investiture ceremonies of the Order of St. John, a Western Christian military order that was founded in Jerusalem in 1023 to care for poor, sick or injured pilgrims journeying to the Holy Land. A Walk in the Woods
Composer: Panza, Michael
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Flute, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryA Walk in the Woods for Flute and Tuba is a Suite in three movements. The first movement, ‘Start of the Journey’, is light and filled with excitement and anticipation of the ‘journey’ ahead. The middle of the movement utilizes a familiar theme in celebration of joy for the impending trip.
The second movement, ‘Exploration in the Phrygian Woods’, uses the Phrygian mode to give the feeling of wonder and suspense of what our two musicians may find. The flute starts with the lead, but the tuba, not to be outdone, quickly takes the melody to have his turn to ‘explore’ the movement. The two join forces to end this movement.
The final movement, ‘Lost and Found’ begins very dark and slow giving the audience the sense of helplessness. But, the sun shines through and our two musicians find their way out of the woods with a light and playful melody. The movement comes to an end as all are well and at peace once more.
Please enjoy, ‘A Walk in the Woods’ for Flute and Tuba. Learn More

HVATI
Composer: Clearfield, Andrea
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Euphonium, Piano
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
HVATI was commissioned by acclaimed Norwegian hornist Froydis Ree Wekre for the renowned Norwegian tuba soloist Øystein Baadsvik. The title is Old Norse for "motivator" or "catalyst". This work was inspired by "hvati" with its vigorous energy and stimuli; instruments initiate movement and change. The piece was also informed by having had the special opportunity to meet with Øystein in Trondheim, Norway, thanks to Froydis Ree Wekre.
The form is a loose ABA structure containing several primary themes that undergo variation and spark propulsive rhythms. A central lyrical section provides a momentary calm; references to earlier material eventually gain momentum and propel the work forward to its close.
The composer wishes to thank Froydis Ree Wekre for her generosity and the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation of New Mexico for providing invaluable time and space to compose this work.
