Quarternary Bones
Composer: Popp, Harold
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Bass Trombone, Trombone
Genre: Contemporary3 Trombones and Bass Trombone
3 movements
This quartet was written to be enjoyable for performing. It includes several points of contrasts: meters, dynamics, rhythms, both solo patterns and ensemble moments. The slower sections allow flexibility of expression and can be approached with lyricism. The two faster sections should move with energy and forward direction. Forward motion is critical. Avoid letting them become ‘heavy’; maintain exuberance and full of life buoyancy. Each part includes moments of solo patterns with accompanying support. The dynamic contrasts throughout are important and should be emphasized, providing increased musical substance; in fact, performers may choose some over-emphasis of dynamics to enhance expression and vitality.
The quartet contains several ‘germ’ musical ideas that provide an occasionally disguised cohesiveness. These occur throughout the various sections. Enjoy!

Journey
Composer: Popp, Harold
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Trombone
Genre: ContemporaryunaccompaniedThis work is intended to be a free expression of a life journey. Various changes are indicative of the challenges each person faces. The piece should be played as the performer faces individual challenges. It may never be performed the same way twice. Our feelings and attitudes are not in a rut to be followed in identical fashion day by day, month by month. Any performer should feel free to approach the piece as an expression of their inner self at a particular time. The value of the music is not merely notes, but resultant of a momentary response to a thought, an idea, or a grasping of concepts beyond the immediate. Music must be inherent in every life form as each seeks to touch true elements of existence. Enjoy! Learn More

Sonata
Composer: Popp, Harold

Genre: Contemporarywith PianoThe sonata is intended to be a chamber work with two players. The two instrumental parts are often intertwined and are in continuous close relationship musically. It was not conceived as solo with keyboard accompaniment, but considered as a gestalt. The trombone lines lay well ‘on the slide’—with use of alternate positions. Learn More
