Pastorale: Peaceful Evening, Op. 52b
Composer: Lorenz, C. Adolph Arranger: Bullock, William J.
Instrumentation: Brass Quintet Instruments: 2 Trumpets, Horn, Trombone and Tuba
Genre: ClassicalBy tradition, the angel’s announcement to the shepherds of the Messiah’s birth is paired with an idyllic instrumental piece. Often entitled pastorale, these works typically flow gently in 6/8 meter in the manner of a lullaby. The type originated in Italy, where rural shepherds followed an old tradition of playing such music on their shawms as they came into town on Christmas morning. An especially charming work of this sort was composed by German composer C. Adolf Lorenz. Lorenz succeeded Carl Loewe as the principal music director/teacher in Szczecin in 1866. He composed several oratorios, two operas, a symphony and several motets, organ works, songs, and teaching pieces. Originally for string trio, harmonium and piano, this arrangement retains the piano and replaces the strings and harmonium with brass quintet. The arrangement features horn, first trumpet and piano.
This version for brass quintet is arranged by William J. Bullock

Shepherds' Music
Composer: Herzogenberg, Heinrich von Arranger: Bullock, William J.
Instrumentation: Brass Quintet Instruments: 2 Trumpets, Horn, Trombone and Tuba, Piano, Timpani
Genre: ChristmasMusic by Heinrich Herzogenberg (1843-1900): Shepherds’ Music (Hirtenmusik, from Geburt Christi, [The Birth of Christ], Op. 90, 1895). Arrangement for brass quintet, piano and optional timpani by William J. Bullock.
By tradition, mention of shepherds at Christmas requires performance of a idyllic instrumental piece. As is true here, such pieces (often entitled “pastorale”) typically flow gently in compound meter in the manner of a lullaby. The type originated in Italy, where rural shepherds followed an old tradition of playing such music on their shawms as they came into town on Christmas morning. Herzogenberg, a professor of composition in Berlin and lifelong friend of Brahms, composed this pastorale for organ and strings for use in the traditional way in his Christmas oratorio. This arrangement is faithful to the original.

March (No. 1 of Ten Pieces, Op. 12)
Composer: Prokofiev, Sergei Arranger: Bullock, William J.
Instrumentation: Septet Instruments: Cello, Clarinet, Flute, French Horn, Piano, Violin
Genre: ContemporaryFlute, Clarinet, Horn, Trumpet, Violin, Cello and Piano
Traditionally the wise men’s journey to the manger is represented with a march. This playful march by one of the twentieth century’s greatest Russian composers could provide an alternative to more traditional marches used for this purpose. Although it is one of Prokofiev’s early works, the March already exhibits aspects of the composer’s mature style: sharply dotted rhythms, acerbic harmonies, and extreme ranges. The work’s sections alternate between F minor and F-sharp minor. Originally scored for piano solo, the piece is presented here in an arrangement for an instrumental ensemble consisting of flute, clarinet, trumpet in C, horn, violin, cello and piano.
