After playing through three different versions of Czardas and feeling like each version could have always had more to it, I finally decided to arrange my own version. What I was finding in the other versions that I layed was the cadenza at the beginning of the piece wasn’t show-stopping enough, and I felt there were more opportunities throughout the entire piece for showmanship … The final cadenza at the end is intended to give this piece and flashy and fun ending. I hope you enjoy my arrangement of Czardas!

Fnugg Red is a variation on this song and was originally written for tuba, trombone and orchestra.

Simone Mantia is one of the most important euphonium virtuosi in the history of the instrument. His contributions to the euphonium repertoire are significant. A composer and arranger, Mantia recognized the need to expand the euphonium repertoire and was active in bringing the euphonium from the back of the band to the front of the stage as a solo instrument.

This solo collection presents modern editions of some of the most well-known pieces in Mantia’s repertoire. These editions are based on the materials found in the Simone Mantia Collection, a resource archived in 2009 by Gretchen Renshaw which contains many of Mantia’s musical possessions. Through collaboration with Steven Mead, Renshaw has aimed to correct the errors in the original versions of these pieces and provide editorial suggestions that will aid in exciting performances of these works.

The titles included in this collection are: Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms, Valse Caprice “Priscilla”, Rio Rita, The Southerner, Solvejg’s Song and Fantasie Originale.

Maurice Saylor began the composition of his “Oboe Trio” at the request of oboist Robin Eazer for his degree recital at the Catholic University of America. During the work’s composition, the oboist was diagnosed with leukemia. That fact changed the nature of the composition. The oboe came to personify the oboist in a trio that contrasts sections of struggle with plateus tranquil, mournful and elegiac until the coda, where the music drifts away into infinity. The work is dedicated to the memory of Robin Eazer who died in 1983.
