After playing through three different versions of Czardas and feeling like each version could have always had more to it, I finally decided to arrange my own version. What I was finding in the other versions that I layed was the cadenza at the beginning of the piece wasn’t show-stopping enough, and I felt there were more opportunities throughout the entire piece for showmanship … The final cadenza at the end is intended to give this piece and flashy and fun ending. I hope you enjoy my arrangement of Czardas!

Oboe, Viola and Cello

Maurice Saylor began the composition of his “Oboe Trio” at the request of oboist Robin Eazer for his degree recital at the Catholic University of America. During the work’s composition, the oboist was diagnosed with leukemia. That fact changed the nature of the composition. The oboe came to personify the oboist in a trio that contrasts sections of struggle with plateus tranquil, mournful and elegiac until the coda, where the music drifts away into infinity. The work is dedicated to the memory of Robin Eazer who died in 1983.

Tuba and Oboe Learn More

Written for oboist Dwight Manning. It is a humorous setting of Laurence McKinney’s poem Oboe. The comical effect of the music and text is enhanced by theatrical gestures by the performers. These are suggested in the score at the appropriate time. For example, before the music commences, the performers are given the following direction: "Enter with great dignity. The oboist should try several reeds before choosing one while the singer becomes somewhat impatient." From that point on there is an amusing tension created between the performers with directions such as (to the singer), "glare at oboist." Or (to the oboist), "Lip down as much as possible, shrug shoulders and begin next phrase." This entertaining composition is a hit with all types of audiences. It is certainly a piece that should be in the repertoire of every oboist. The vocal range is from D below the treble staff, to Gb above the staff. (The Gb is used only one time.) Learn More

This concerto, commissioned by music teacher William T. Robinson, was originally scored for Bass Trombone and String Orchestra. This Piano reduction was done by the composer and is a three-movement work approximately nine minutes long, each movement leading directly to the next.

The first movement opens with a slow introduction based on quartal harmony. The main portion of the movement is an allegro that explores changing meters. The second movement is slow, with a mournful character. The modal harmony is centered around D minor. The third movement is in an Afro-Caribbean style. The second and third movements include cadenzas for the soloist.

This book is born out of my experience teaching economically disadvantaged folk and wanting there to be a better way of getting my students materials than stealing the work of my colleagues by making photocopies of singular exercises out of books. We, as teachers and students, have all had books that were 50-300 pages long that we would like our students to own, but do not ask them to purchase because they might only use 3-20 pages. My students, generally, cannot afford to buy every book and musicians cannot afford to give away their work for free. This book is not meant to be exhaustive or original in content. It is meant to meant to be a survey of some of the work needed to become one of “the world’s best,” meant to inspire a student to purchase books that are more in depth on the concepts presented, and most of all, meant to give a student one book that touches on most skills needed in the western art aesthetic.
