Trombone Graffiti
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Trombone
Genre: Contemporary"Trombone Graffiti" for trombone quartet or ensemble by Howard J. Buss was composed in the fall of 2016. While writing this work the composer envisioned trombonists creating graffiti, not in the usual manner with paint and chalk, but with sonic gestures. The composition is musically sophisticated, yet is designed to appeal to a wide range of audiences. At times the music is characterized by bold, colorful swoops of sound, often with idiomatic glissandi. In other sections, staccato passages suggest a pointillist approach to creating the graffiti. Throughout, an undercurrent of edginess and electrifying tension permeates the music, as if to suggest the graffiti artists face the risk of getting caught in the act of producing their art. Prayer
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Ensemble Instruments: Trombone
Genre: Contemporary"This beautiful, meditative work is designed to be performed in a concert venue or as a musical offering in a house of worship. Its reverent quality is enhanced by the rich sonority and organ-like quality of the large trombone ensemble. The musical language of Prayer is sophisticated, yet audience-friendly. It begins with a lyrical 12-tone melody that is symbolic of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. The dodecaphonic reference also relates to the instrumentation: From the pickup to measure 70 to the end, the twelve pitches of the opening melody are presented with each player assigned to one pitch. When performing this closing passage it is important that the 12 players shape the 12 separate pitches into one lyrical melody (as it was presented at the beginning of the piece by player one). This composition is accessible to amateur and high school-level players. It may be performed with ten tenor and two bass trombones. Parts 11 and 12 are specifically notated for bass trombones. If an additional bass trombone is available it may be used on part 6. Other parts easily playable on a bass trombone are 4, 5, and 10. Part 6 has a low E-flat with may be facilitated with an F-attachment if no bass trombone is available to cover the part." Crossroads
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Mixed Ensemble Instruments: Percussion, Trombone
Genre: Contemporary4 Trombones and 8 Percussion: The character of this music is strongly influenced by jazz and Latin music. The intriguing rhythms and soaring melodies combined with the implied theatre suggested by the staging, make this a sophisticated, yet accessible composition that is rewarding to perform and listen to. The 4 trombone parts may be performed with a quartet; however, it is desirable to have multiple players used on each part except in those areas where the score specifically specifies one player on a part for a particular passage. The unique instrumentation of this ensemble, combined with the prevalence of numerous colleges and universities that have trombone choirs and percussion ensembles, make this a concert work that is destined to become standard literature. "Somewhat contemporary sounding, with jazz and Latin influences, one's interest is held for the entirety. The two instrument families are well integrated throughout. Some sections are extremely lyrical in the percussion ensemble and rhythmic in the trombones, vice versa in others. This compositional technique allows for great clarity throughout the work. An enjoyable work for the performers and audience." -Susan Martin Tariq, Percussive Notes Magazine. Dedicated to Tom Brantley and Robert McCormick. The University of South Florida Trombone Choir and Percussion Ensemble premiered it in Tampa, Florida on January 21, 2012 under the direction of Robert McCormick. Three Dances

Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Bassoon, Clarinet, Trombone
Genre: ContemporaryIn 3 movements : Jazz Waltz, Slow Dance, and Irish Jig. In this charming and entertaining work the composer envisions two people dancing with one another. The melody is introduced by the bassoon (or trombone) and is passed back and forth throughout. In the enchanting second movement, Slow Dance, the musical material undergoes continuous development with the equality of the parts being paramount. The energetic final movement, Irish Jig, opens with an intriguing mixed meter section which leads to the rousing jig. It concludes with an exciting and frenzied accelerando and fugue. Brom Bones
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Brass Choir Instruments: Bass Trombone, French Horn, Trombone, Trumpet, Tuba
Genre: Contemporary"Musically depicts the character and exploits of Washington Irving’s dashing prankster in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The musical ensemble consists of 4 Bb trumpets (an optional Eb part is included for trumpet 1), one French horn, 3 tenor trombones, one bass trombone and tuba. This entertaining composition is in 5 movements, the first 2 are interconnected: Overture, The Smoke Out, The Schoolhouse Caper, Ichabod’s Romance, and Night Encounter. Following the energetic and heroic Overture, in The Smoke Out tone clusters represent the buildup of smoke in Ichabod’s singing school. Chorale-like passages suggest the music of the singers in training. The movement ends in transition, as Brom Bones and his small band of pranksters gallop off to their next adventure. The third movement, The Schoolhouse Caper, combines very aggressive and topsy-turvy passages with humorous, plodding interjections. Ichabod’s Romance begins as a beautiful unaccompanied ballad which is abruptly disturbed by a cacophony of muted brass, suggesting the whining of Brom’s mocking dog. Beautiful hymn-like sections serve as the backdrop to heartfelt solo passages, which are again disturbed by Brom’s annoying dog. The movement ends as it began, with the beautiful solo. The intense final movement, Night Encounter, depicts Ichabod’s frightening and fateful run-in with the Headless Horseman, suspected by some to be Brom Bones in disguise."
