In These Delightful, Pleasant Groves
Composer: Purcell, Henry Arranger: Hill, Todd
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: BaroqueThis arrangement for Tuba Quartet (EETT) works equally with just four players or doubling up on the parts to make it a larger ensemble piece. It is not overly difficult, but at a quick tempo can create some issues. A High School or beyond ensemble will really enjoy working on this piece. There It Is
Composer: Ardovino, Lori
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Bass Clarinet, Clarinet, Eb Clarinet
Genre: ContemporaryE-flat Clarinet, 2 Clarinets and Bass Clarinet
This suite is drawn from the composer’s new score for the vintage 1928 silent comedy of the same name starring Charlie Bowers. The original film score runs 20 minutes and is scored for piccolo, sopranino recorder, 2 soprano recorders, ocarina, oboe, English horn, Eb clarinet, Bb clarinet, 2 bass clarinets, contrabass clarinet, banjo, slide whistle, saw, glockenspiel, percussion, toy piano, 3 melodicas, accordian, and piano. Here it has been pared down to 11 minutes and rescored for clarinet quartet.
Synopsis of the wonderfully weird film: Scotland Yard detective Charley MacNeesha carries his constant companion MacGregor–who is either a hairy insect or a buggy-looking mouse–in a matchbox. The pair travels to New York to solve the case of the Fuzz-Faced Phantom who causes full-grown chickens to hatch from eggs, pots to rain from the ceiling, and pants to dance of their own volition in a surrealist comedy that anticipated Salvador Dali and Luis Bunuel’s “An Andalusian Dog” by more than a year.

Variations on an Unstated Theme
Composer: Cross, Steven
Instrumentation: Brass Quintet Instruments: 2 Trumpets, Horn, Trombone and Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryFor Brass Quintet, let's just let the composer describe this piece:
I began the composition of this work as a straightforward theme and variations. As I got into it a little more, I began to wonder what would be the result if I made the theme tacit, but left enough clues within the body of the composition to see if anyone who performs, studies or hears this work, would have an opportunity to figure out the actual theme on which all of this is based. That thought intrigued me, but I realized that in order to do this successfully, I had to leave enough clues to make it solvable, but not too many to make it obvious. Seeing that there are probably over a hundred millionty-billion tunes out there, erring on the side of too many clues did not seem to be a hazard. So this is my deal to all of you:
1.) If you produce a cogent and reasoned hypothesis as to which tune is being utilized, and you are correct, I will tell you so.
2.) Don’t come up with something like: “The first three notes are the same as the Star-Spangled Banner, so it must be the Star-spangled Banner”. That just shows that you are lazy and expect to have the answer to be spoon-fed to you; that behavior, I assure you, will not be rewarded. (HINT: “It is not the Star-Spangled Banner).
3.) Wild or random guesses with no basis on reasoning behind them will not be dignified with a response.
4.) If no one guesses this before I die, the answer will be lost to the ages and speculation as to what tune it is will gnaw at your souls for all eternity. I will not give my attorney a copy with the instructions to open it 25 years after my death, or anything like that. Guess it, fine; don’t guess it; oh well…life goes on.
In order to make your task a tad easier, I will offer to you the following
items:
1.) There is a reason why the intro and theme are in duple time, but all the variations are in triple time.
2.) Transition segments, which may seem superfluous to the variations, serve a distinct purpose.
3.) The dissonances of the 2nd Variation require further study.
4.) Pay special attention to the motivic development, not only within a variation, but as it is handled throughout the piece.
5.) Key selections were not random, but chosen for a very specific
reason.
6.) Sometimes fruit will be borne in the least obvious places.
7.) A mirror may be your best friend.
I don’t know if these clues help or hinder, but regardless I wish you all the best of luck should you desire to begin in this hunt.
Steven Cross, October 2013

Will There Be a Time
Composer: Raum, Elizabeth
Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Tuba
Genre: Contemporaryfor unaccompanied Tuba
Will There Be a Time is a work for solo tuba that makes a statement against war. In the opening section, March and Battle, the tuba simulates the low rumble of the approaching tanks and gunshots of the fighting. The frantic cries of those trying to escape are mixed with the sounds of the battle in Fleeing Refugees while the hopelessness of the Aftermath asks the question, Will There Be a Time?
This work was inspired by a news report I heard when a woman, driven from her home by war, was briefly interviewed. She and her neighbour had been friends, having coffee together while they talked about their children, and now, she and her neighbour were forced to be enemies against their will by the warring factions and she couldn't understand why this had to be.

Gaelic Rhapsody on Irish Themes (with Wind Band)
Composer: Bough, Thomas
Instrumentation: Solo and Wind Band Instruments: Bass Trombone
Genre: Contemporarywith Wind Band
Bass Trombone player Rose DoyleMason and I discussed creating a solo piece for Bass Trombone with wind band accompaniment several years before the piece came to light in 2023. Her vision was to use Irish folks songs, which reflected her heritage, to create a fun but challenging composition to show off the virtuosity of the bass trombone. She provided more than a dozen songs to consider, and taught me a great deal about modern Irish folk songs in the process. From her suggestions, and other research, I chose two songs to form the basis of the composition. The song “Star of County Down” has been recorded by a number of Irish groups, with a lot more variation between the recordings than I would have imagined. The lyrics describe the romantic pursuit of a particularly attractive Irish girl, who is described as the “star” of County Down, located in Northern Ireland. My son, Stephen, shared with me a recording by a band called “The High Kings”, from their album Memory Lane, that shifted effortlessly between 6/8 and cut time, punctuated by 3 repeated chords at each transition. This recording fired my imagination and the composition process began! You can hear these transition chords in “Gaelic Rhapsody”, as we move across the time signatures. Rose suggested a beautiful Irish ballad called “A Chomaraigh Aoibhinn O” for inclusion in the lyrical section of the piece. The title, and the words are in Gaelic, written by a priest to describe the Comeragh Mountains in County Waterford in Ireland. There is a beautiful rendition by folk singer Karan Casey available on YouTube. I am thrilled that Dr. Paul Bauer will serve as the soloist for the premiere of this piece, scheduled for April 2024. Dr. Bauer was the chairman of the music department at NIU when I was hired in 2005, and I have been grateful for his leadership and friendship ever since. Likewise, I am grateful to my wonderful students at NIU, and specifically the members of the Wind Ensemble, whose talent and skill will bring the premiere to life.
