GOOD LIPS: Warm-ups, Daily Routines, and Etudes for Brass Players

This book is born out of my experience teaching economically disadvantaged folk and wanting there to be a better way of getting my students materials than stealing the work of my colleagues by making photocopies of singular exercises out of books. We, as teachers and students, have all had books that were 50-300 pages long that we would like our students to own, but do not ask them to purchase because they might only use 3-20 pages. My students, generally, cannot afford to buy every book and musicians cannot afford to give away their work for free. This book is not meant to be exhaustive or original in content. It is meant to meant to be a survey of some of the work needed to become one of “the world’s best,” meant to inspire a student to purchase books that are more in depth on the concepts presented, and most of all, meant to give a student one book that touches on most skills needed in the western art aesthetic.

The inspiration for the quartet began with a short work named “The Seventh Degree” which was inspired by my daughter, Cadence, and her ability to question everything to its fullest extent. After the work received its premiere, I decided to create two more works that revolved around the other members of my family to complete this quartet. Movement 1, To Be Mischievous, was written about my young son, Andrew, who describes the title perfectly in his actions. Movement 2, To Be Loved, is a song that was written to my wife, Stephanie, to thank her for everything that she has meant to our family. The Seventh Degree was adapted into Movement 3, To Be Questioned, and still describes my daughter and her desire to know more and be curious about everything. Learn More

This collection of quartets is designed for players who may have had limited experience with small ensemble performance. The ranges are moderate and the rhythms are not complex. Each of the selections offer ensemble and solo or featured passages for all players. Styles, tempos and meters vary from one piece to another. Of course, more advanced players can certainly play and enjoy this set, but the less experienced can have some success with pieces that allow them to concentrate on the musical and ensemble aspects, rather than being slowed by technical elements.
