Earthy and Ethereal Bond, The
Composer: Lee, Wendy Wan-Ki
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Cello, Flute
Genre: ContemporaryFlute and Cello
Wendy Lee writes: This piece is my musical exploration of the philosophical struggle between reality and idealism that each of us has endured in our minds—from the mishaps and social injustices that we encounter each day, to what we aspire and hope for that seems far-fetched and unattainable. Although life is always full of wonderful surprises that play with our expectations, part of what determines our everyday experiences is how much we can look beyond our earthy encounters which may not be the most desirable at times, and strive for our dreams to come true. The stronger the bonding between the two extremes—the earthy and the ethereal, the more perseverance we can have, and the closer we can get to our ideals.
This piece was commissioned by the Hong Kong Composers’ Guild for Musicarama 2010 and premiered on October 16, 2010 at Hong Kong City Hall Theatre by Next Mushroom Promotion, a professional new music ensemble from Japan.

Beauty of Nature, The
Composer: Douyon, Marc
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Voice
Genre: ContemporaryTHE BEAUTY OF NATURE for voice and piano, words and music by Marc Douyon, speaks of happiness when we look at Nature as art, teacher, healer, and provider. It evokes the importance of the laws of Nature, and how we depend on them. It also recognizes Nature as a force. The intimacy between the singer and the pianist highlights the emotions expressed in the text and the music. Since the range of the vocal solo is from B3 to G5 , it is especially suitable for medium voice, but most sopranos, altos, and tenors will find it comfortable to sing. Songs of Distant Earth
Composer: Wilson, Kenyon Arranger: Ostrander, Phil
Instrumentation: Quintet Instruments: Bass Trombone, Trombone
Genre: ContemporaryIn 2006, the International Astronomical Union clarified the definition of a planet, creating a new class of objects known as dwarf planets. They are defined as a celestial body orbiting the Sun that is massive enough to be rounded by its own gravity but has not cleared its neighboring region of planetesimals and is not a moon. As of the end of 2008, there are five known dwarf planets – Eris, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake and Ceres – and these are the subject of Songs of Distant Earth.
Songs of Distant Earth was the third prize winner of the 2011 International Trombone Festival Composition Contest sponsored by Bone Therapy.

Scherzo
Composer: Mendelssohn, Felix Arranger: Forbes, Michael
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Euphonium
Genre: ClassicalA tour-de-force orchestral work especially for the string section, the Scherzo from Felix Mendelssohn’s (1809-1847) “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is a fast, light exhilarating work depicting William Shakespeare’s fantastic play. As a euphonium quartet, it works well to feature the virtuosity of all four players as well as to exhibit the amazing, nimble quality of the euphonium throughout an extensive performing range.

Quattro Canzoni
Composer: Gabrieli, Giovanni Arranger: Forbes, Michael
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: BaroqueEETT
Giovanni Gabrieli’s (1557/57- 1612) Four Canzoni would have been performed in liturgical settings from the balconies in the magnificent St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venic where Gabrieli was the principal organist. These four arrangements may be performed individually or as a group and would be especially suitable as prelude music to our modern church services.

In Memory of our friend Tubabass Tzu-Ming Hsu Commissioned by EuTuba Euphonium and Tuba Ensemble.
This piece was commissioned by my close friend, Tubabass Tzu-Ming Hsu who was the member of EuTuba Euphonium and Tuba Ensemble and holds New Year's celebrations every year for Taiwanese bass and euphonium players. He told me that he would love to have a theme song for the New Year's event and we could play it every year. His enthusiasm for music and low brass group always touches me. Unfortunately, our friend left us before the premiere.
The first part of the piece begins with a powerful rhythm which means we have firm confidence and courage and ready to set off again. The opening section leads into a slow and touching melody which shows the charm of low brass.
I wrote this piece to encourage all the musicians and ensemble affected by the pandemic. Finally, I want to say to you in heaven, we will work hard to enforce your spirit and beliefs.
We will play this piece at New Year's events every year.

Forest Sounds
Composer: Zugger, Thomas
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Bass Clarinet, Clarinet, Flute, Piccolo
Genre: ContemporaryPlayer doubles on: Flute/Piccolo and Clarinet/Bass ClarinetForest Sounds was composed in 2013 as a commission for the Inspirare Duo, clarinetist Gail Zugger and flutist Lisa Jelle and premiered by them in October of that year. The piece is one movement, divided into four sections, each focusing on a concept of sound within a forest. The first section is bird calls, featuring the robin and cardinal. Section two introduces waterfowl with conversations between the sandpiper, mallard duck, and loon. Section three features the small critters: squirrel, chipmunk and rabbit scurrying about on the forest floor. The final section is a portrait of all the animals on a sunny summer day enjoying a multitude of simultaneous conversations. Tempo markings and alterations should be viewed as guides. Forsaken Caverns
Composer: Denham, Robert
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Bass, Bassoon
Genre: ContemporaryThis work was written at the request of Tina Carpenter (bassoon) and Nick Scales (bass), and was premiered by them in January of 2007. The original intent for the piece was to showcase as many different timbral possibilities for these instruments as possible, while still holding to a high level of artistic credibility. Its three movements, separated by cadenzas for each instrument, belie a rough adherence to the principles of sonata form in that the two themes so prominently displayed in the first movement provide the main material for the music of the third. The atmosphere is meant to evoke the naturally mournful sounds of long-forgotten caves.
