  2. Espérer

    Composer: Liang, Wan-Yun
    Instrumentation: Quintet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary

Espérer (Hope) was composed of three Euphoniums and two Tubas and is an ABA form. Section A consists of two themes: The first theme is played smoothly with a constant rhythm to express the spirit of the title “Hope” and the second theme is sung with a more relaxed melody line. The B section, which is more lyrical, allows the Euphonium parts to soar over the ensemble as they lead to the the return to the A section and the piece’s climactic conclusion.

This piece was commissioned by the 2018 Taiwan Tuba Euphonium Festival to express the feeling of "hope" through clear and powerful music. It is the hope that through music more performers, both in Taiwan and abroad, will be interested in performing in Taiwan where they can express themselves through their art.

  4. Gravity

    Composer: Writer, Justin
    Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary

Gravity for tuba ensemble (EEETTT) is a musical rendition of what goes up must come down. This rhythmically aggressive work features the attacking quality of the tuba through the use of hard articulations and fast double tonguing. Slight pause from the onslaught of motivic variation comes in the form of a five-part fugal section that brings “gravity” to its lowest point. The work ends with one final variation where high notes attempt to resist the force of gravity.

  7. Kidstuff Protocols

    Composer: Kirby, Benedict
    Instrumentation: Octet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary
EEEETTTT Kidstuff Protocols was written in the spring of 2019 for the University of Montana Tuba and Euphonium Choir as part of their programing for their performance at the 2019 International Tuba and Euphonium Conference held in Iowa City, IA in May of that year. The music is a modern, yet mischievous mashup of 8 references to well known children’s songs - in keeping with that conference’s “Young At Heart Theme. The tunes are separated by connective material meant to provide cohesion to the composition. Each tune iteration has its own unique style and all of them except for The Muffin Man and the cadenza rendering of the “Villa Borghese” should have a sense of high energy regardless of dynamic. Their order of their appearance is as follows: 1) Mary Had a Little Lamb - in hot swing style (with the low tubas serving as percussionists with hi-hat special effects (beat-boxing the vocals into the tuba while crisply slapping the lower right side of the instrument) 2) Camptown Races - partially set as a 3 against 2 hemiola. 3) Nick Nack Paddywack (also known as This Old Man) - set as a brief march. 4) Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star - briefly set in the Lydian mode. 5) Children’s theme from I. Villa Borghese of Respighi’s Pines of Rome - set as a cadenza answer to the euphonium cadenza which precedes it. 6) The Muffin Man - harmonized in barbershop quartet (in this case octet!) style. 7) Row, Row Row Your Boat - set in a polyharmonic march style. 8) Mary Had a Little Lamb - recapitulation as in the beginning with more intensity. 13. Salutations

    Composer: Kirby, Benedict
    Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary
EEETTT Salutations was written in the fall of 2018 for the “Young At Heart” massed tuba & euphonium choir at the 2019 International Tuba & Euphonium Conference held in late May on the campus of the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA. The music is in 6 parts and is intended for lots of players with numbers equally balanced among the parts. It will also work just fine with one on a part. Dynamics and articulations should be very literally observed as the music weaves its way from special “wind” effects into actual playing. The fact of the music being a concert fanfare is only actually musically revealed when we reach bar 56. All music before that should always be played with a leading/forecasting quality - especially beginning at bar 46 and the next 10 bars of music. Bar 56 is marked “Brassy!” and should contrast very much from the preceding music. Bar 60 opens up wide and should be played broadly. A tutti unison, more counterpoint and changes of key also need a terraced ramping up of energy as the music approaches a sort of awe-inspired “Young At Heart” theme (sing those words in your mind and you’ll know what I mean!) which is heard at bar 88 (we first hear it at bar 31). More fanfare gesturing and a brief recap of the introduction bring the piece to a grand conclusion! Learn More

  17. Slow Machines Moving at a Surprisingly Fast Pace

    Composer: Jungman, Logan
    Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary

    EETTTT

“Slow Machines Moving at a Surprisingly Fast Pace” was commissioned by Brielan Andersen, DMA in Tuba Performance, for the University of Missouri-Kansas City Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble, under the direction of Thomas G. Stein. This piece was premiered on June 1st, 2016 at the 2016 International Tuba Euphonium Conference held in Knoxville, Tennessee at the University of Tennessee. This piece, along with many other compositions for tuba, is also featured on Brielan’s CD “Music for Tuba and Friends”.

"Slow Machines Moving at a Surprisingly Fast Pace” is a piece that is written for tuba-euphonium ensemble. The piece is based on the stereotype that these low brass instruments can’t play quite as swiftly and gracefully as a violin, flute, or something along those lines; however, to prove this stereotype wrong, these “machines” can, and do, move at a surprisingly fast pace. The piece features two different melodies that can be heard throughout the entire piece, usually being played by two instruments, while the other instruments have a steady, almost machine-like rhythmic material. To fit into Brielan’s broad theme of “American” for her CD, I decided to go down the route of minimalism, which the minimalist music movement began in the west coast of America, the music is similar to that of Steve Reich with phasing between the instruments, and the title is a bit of a parody off of John Adam’s “Short Ride in a Fast Machine”.

  19. The Battle At Daylight

    Composer: Liang, Wan-Yun
    Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary
EEETTT “The Battle at Daylight” was commissioned by S-Master Low Brass Ensemble and premiered on Feb. 16, 2019. This piece was composed for young Euphonium and Tuba players. The main theme is presented at the beginning by a solo Euphonium declaring the break of dawn. This piece consists of three parts after the prelude. The phrase of “Moderate” presents the main theme and gradually increases the texture entering into the second part which is “Con brio”. This represents the determination to fight for the daylight. The conclusion is the presentation once again of the prelude music and the first main theme, but in a more powerful fashion and concludes with majestic momentum. Learn More

  20. Thump

    Composer: Cottrell, Jeffrey
    Instrumentation: Ensemble Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary

    EEEETTT

THUMP is a piece originally for Wind Band that has been adapted for Tuba Ensemble.  It portrays that feeling of drive and purpose that one has when fulfilling a difficult task or mission with confidence.  Its music is meant to be heroic, and yet you can hear that the hero or heroine has obstacles to overcome. You may hear it as the background music to an army marching to battle they know they can win, or perhaps an overture to a Klingon Opera, as the Star trek fan in me may have imagined sometimes while writing this.
