Illuminations
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and Wind Band Instruments: Bass Trombone, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryOriginally for bass trombone (or tuba) and piano, was composed for Charles Vernon, bass trombonist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the 30th Anniversary of the International Trombone Festival. This significant addition to the repertoire is written in an accessible modern style. The musical language is sophisticated, yet appealing to general audiences. Illuminations is cast in 2 contrasting movements: The first, Reverie, is contemplative and lyrical. Beautiful, expansive melodic lines are woven into a gentle, almost mystical, musical fabric. The second movement, Urban Lights, is an energetic rondo that is strongly influenced by jazz, and in one section, funk music. “Thoughtful, tuneful, and rewarding to perform.” – ITA Journal Learn MoreUpdate Required To play the media you will need to either update your browser to a recent version or update your Flash plugin. From $100.00

Reflections on the "Last Post"
Composer: Buss, Howard J.
Instrumentation: Solo and Wind Band Instruments: Tuba
Genre: Contemporary"Reflections on the Last Post" for tuba and band (or wind ensemble) by Howard J. Buss was inspired by The Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres, Belgium. It honors the thousands of soldiers who died to free Belgium from the Germans in WWI. The Last Post Ceremony was first held on July 1928 and has been performed every night since November 11, 1929 at the Menin Gate Memorial, except during the years of the German occupation of Ypres from May 20, 1940 to September 6, 1944. During the occupation the ceremony was continued at the Brookwood Military Cemetery in Surrey, England. The composition develops the “Last Post” bugle call, which is performed near the beginning of the ceremony. The work also has stirring sections signifying the youthfulness and vitality of those who fought and died on the Ypres battlefields This work was winner of the Composition Competition of the U.S. Army Band’s 2019 Tuba-Euphonium Workshop and will be used for the workshop’s 2020 performers’ competition. Shipped - Concertino
Composer: Batterham, Andrew
Instrumentation: Solo and Wind Band Instruments: Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryConcertino was commissioned by Sergio Carolino (Principal tuba, Orquestra Sinfonica do Porto, Portugal) for premiere with the Banda Sinfonica Portuguesa, under the artistic direction of Francisco Ferreira. Sergio Carolino is an extremely diverse and inquisitive performer, with forays into jazz, funk and duets with a DJ to his credit. To take advantage of this, one of the aims of Concertino is to give this unique performer an opportunity to showcase a varied palette of skills within a symphonic band setting. Andrew Batterham has often assimilated several different musical languages into his work, and so the journey from traditional wind band music, through funk and jazz improvisation, to dance modern styles was an exciting one.
The piece is divided into two halves. The first is couched in a Classical, common-chord musical language, developing traditional material in a slow, soulful way. The second half develops the same material, but utilizing beat-oriented styles such as funk and techno, resulting in a varied musical canvas upon which the soloist can express themselves in spectacular fashion.

Shipped - Concerto
Composer: York, Barbara
Instrumentation: Solo and Wind Band Instruments: Tuba
Genre: Contemporarywith Concert Band
This Tuba Concerto was commissioned in 2004 by tubist, Michael Fischer, and the Boise State University Symphony Orchestra. It was my fourth piece for Dr. Fischer, and is subtitled “Wars and Rumors of War”. Since I do tend to write “concept pieces”, there is some programmatic content that proceeds through the development of its underlying musical and emotional structure. Contrary to what its subtitle might suggest, this is not intended to be a political statement about war, but is rather intended to be a philosophical and even rather intimate examination of the personal effect that this type of activity has on those who participate in it.

Suite Tuba was written in honor of my doctoral advisor and applied instructor from Arizona State University, J. Samuel Pilafian. Although Sam is best known in the brass world for his ground-breaking performances as the tuba player and founding member of the Empire Brass Quintet, he was also the primary arranger and business manager for Empire for nearly 20 years. He is also an incredible teacher, who has trained thousands of musicians around the world. Sam had a profound impact on my career in all four areas, that is, as a player, a composer and arranger, entrepreneur and teacher. This composition is designed to reflect different elements of training and studying with Sam.Update Required To play the media you will need to either update your browser to a recent version or update your Flash plugin. As low as $100.00
