  5. A Stroll Through the Mind Garden

    Composer: McMillan, Benjamin
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary

    with Piano

“The mind is a fertile garden – it will grow anything you wish to plant –

beautiful flowers or weeds.” – Bruce Lee

A Stroll Through Mind Gardens depicts an imaginary journey inwards to the

realm of imagination, where thoughts bloom and float by like flower petals on the wind.  Connected by variations on a dance-like ‘strolling’ rhythm, the listener is taken on a colorful and vibrant tour of a vast ‘aural mind garden.’

Written during the autumn of 2019, the work was commissioned by David Saltzman to be premiered at the Northeast Regional Tuba/Euphonium Conference (NERTEC) at Ithaca College. It’s intended to have stately-dance feel that acts as a

musical anchor point for the changing melodies and harmonies, although this rhythm itself also undergoes several variations throughout. The sectional structure of the piece and the transitions between them are written in a way that often flow in and out of one another, similar to a typical stream of thought.

The piece provides a moderate challenge for the performer, demanding an expressive, musical approach, and quick changes of style.

  13. Brumous Fantasies

    Composer: McMillan, Benjamin
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary
with Piano; The word "brumous" is used for describing gray, sunless, and overall depressing winter weather. The winter of 2015 was particularly brutal for me in multiple ways, leading to a prolonged state of depression. This piece became dedicated to the idea of escaping that depression through various fantasies. My fantasies and daydreams tend to arise rather spontaneously, often without any seeming connection to my previous thoughts. I tried to recreate this spontaneous (or erratic) nature in the music. A series of three fantasies unfolds from a stark, wintry atmosphere represented by three chords in the upper octaves of the piano. These chords return again at the end of the piece, this time resolved with an additional major chord, a kind of hopefulness gained from the fantasies. Learn More

  14. Capricious Suite

    Composer: Paff, John
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary
    with Piano

By the title, one might expect something unusual, and they would be correct. This three-movement suite begins with a slow tempo introduction, moving to a faster main part. However, soon some additional sounds emerge. In places, the player is asked to sing through the instrument, while playing other notes. To make this more manageable, the played notes are usually in a low range and do not move quickly. This allows the vocal sounds to be made more easily. The player may choose their most comfortable octave to sing the vocal notes. Most are written as “ah” sounds, with the exception of a few that are done while not playing a note, and are written as “la”, and still intended to be through the instrument. Other “extra” sounds are done with tapping and occasional stomping. Tapping can be done on any nearby surface. A plastic shoebox works well and could be placed on a close-by table or chair. Tapping could also be done on one’s instrument, but many might prefer another surface.

The three movements are in contrasting styles and tempos. There is enough “normal” material in this piece to make it more friendly to an audience than it could be, considering the extra sounds. Players may need to work on the singing while playing aspect in order to feel comfortable doing it. Also, players may want to try several tapping surfaces to see which they prefer. All in all, Capricious Suite for Tuba and Piano contains some unexpected sounds, but should be fun and interesting to play and hear. Learn More

  16. Cheerful Suite

    Composer: Mullen, Paul
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary
    with Piano

Cheerful Suite is a light-hearted work for solo tuba and piano in five short movements. It received its premiere in 2013 in Ocala, FL, with the composer on tuba and Ryan Pagels on piano. The work begins with a brisk romp, followed by a stately modal march. Later a tender lullaby gives way to a racing flourish of excitement to conclude the work. It is the hope of the composer that Cheerful Suite will bring joy to both performers and audience members alike.

Paul Mullen has been composing music since 1999. He attended Stetson University in 2000 to study composition with Kari Juusela. While there, his composition for trombone choir, Epitaph, won 1st place in the SCI composers competition. He went on to earn his masters degree in music composition at the University of Missouri - Kansas City, studying with Jim Mobberley, Paul Rudy, and Chen Yi. Along with composing, he has been active as a tubaist, performing with the First Coast Wind Symphony in Jacksonville, FL, the Southern Winds in Deland, FL, and by frequently giving solo performances. 19. Concertino

    Composer: Hadden, John
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary

    with Piano (also available with String Ensemble accompaniment);

Concertino was written during the same time I was finishing Pirate Memories which is a work for Solo Tuba and Wind Ensemble. This work explores a different soundscape for the tuba, taking advantage of the ensemble that Koetsier and Plog have so expertly utilized: solo tuba and string orchestra. Like their works, Concertino has an effective piano reduction; however, the work truly shines with the utilization of the strings.

Although there are no extended techniques, the different timbres between arco and pizzicato, basses up to violins, and strings to tuba create a unique sound that audience members are not graced with often enough. There is an extraordinary blend between the majestic bass tuba sound and this 5-part scoring for strings. Although the piece has its moments of comedic intrigue, all 3 movements are written with the intention of grabbing serious attention from the performer as well as the listener. Especially in the fast paced and technically challenging final movement, the soloist has the opportunity to combine artistic quality with their most impressive mechanical abilities.
