    Genre: Contemporary
Gail Robertson’s Funk Centric is a work for tuba and euphonium with fixed media. It is dedicated to the Robertson’s long-time friend and Disney’s Tubafours partner in crime, Willie Clark. Robertson and Clark worked together full-time from 1989-1999 at Walt Disney World… fresh out of college. The two have remained close friends over the years and this work will celebrate Willie’s upcoming retirement from the United States Air Force “Ceremonial Band” in Washington, D. C. after 20-years of service.  Clark “also known as night-time Willie,” is a man full of style and groove. This funk centered work uses descriptive texts such as “strut along,” “dig in with style,” “make it happen,” “like a nighttime stroll,” and “sassy”…. all words that describe Willie Clark. The unison lines that occur in this work are a symbol of their close friendship and love of playing together. - Gail Robertson Learn More

“You can’t fight the desert...you have to ride with it.” – Louis L’Amour

I’ve always been fascinated by deserts; the stark, almost alien landscapes, the extremely diverse and efficient ecosystems, the mystic, spiritual effect of being in the vast expanses of silent nature. Recently I travelled from the Pacific Northwest into the deserts of Nevada and Utah. While neither are the typical Hollywood deserts of endless sand dunes, they hold their own magic. Mirages are a part of that magic. I watched them rise and fall as I drove by, imagination blending with the illusions to create hidden cities. As with many of my works, I didn’t start out with a concrete concept, but as the scales and modes started to come through, desert imagery continually flowed through my mind’s eye.

The piece consists of three sections, each fading and evaporating like mirages. Stylistically there are heavy elements of rock and jazz, as well as the percussion flavors of the Middle East, India, and Central America.

I’d also like to thank everyone who contributed to the creation of this piece. You all help make it possible for composers to keep creating new music!

  6. Passage

    Composer: Robertson, Gail
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Electronics, Euphonium, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary
Passage was composed in February 2023 for Robertson’s last Florida student Matthew Holbrook. When Matthew asked me to compose something lyrical for his Senior Recital, I didn’t hesitate a second since he had moved all the way from Florida to Arkansas to study with me! Passage is sort of a story of Matthew’s path since arriving in Arkansas. It begins with two slightly conflicting ideas followed by a unison melody that is symbolic of our lessons and friendship. New melodic lines speak to each other as if having a conversation and later intertwine and cross over each other. I somehow managed to overlap two wonderful hymns in this work. A slightly altered All Things Bright and Beautiful and Jean Sibelius’ theme from Finlandia also known as Catharina von Schlegel’s German hymn Be Still My Soul. Later the work presses on and is symbolic of someone on a mission to graduate and soon get married. There are hints of wedding bells, a marching band and a tiny hint of Barbara York’s A Caged Bird. – Gail Robertson Learn More
