The form of most of the movements in the typical Bolognese trumpet sonata is rudimentary, the organizing principle of concertato being textural rather than thematic or even tonal… In fact, Torelli is considered to be a pioneer in the use of fugal technique for its architectural rather than its contrapuntal properties… In some of his earlier works, Torelli maintained the fast-slow-fast tempo pattern with four distinct movements, but by the time of this Sinfonia, the slow first movement had been virtually abandoned… This offers a modern performance edition of an important piece from one of the most prolific collections of trumpet music.”

Sol y Sombra is a joyous and festive piece, in the form of a malaguena, for solo trumpet and band, here with a piano reduction. It begins with a virtuosic cadenza, and the accompaniment later joins in a flamenco style.

The opera is set in Spain in the early fifteenth century and is based on a play by Antonio Maria Gutierrez.  

“Squilli, echeggi la tromba guerriera”, maybe is the most famous chorus of the Verdi’s in unison chorus after “Va pensiero”, whose strenght and charm lie especially in the pleasantly unusual for Verdi composer.

This solo for trumpet delivers exactly what the title advertises: A moving, lyrical first movement featuring a short cadenza, followed by a spirited second movement that employs shifting time signatures and edgier harmonies to contrast the first.

Trumpet Sonata by Brett Miller is a three-movement work written in 2008. Although contemporary, the mood of this piece is quite pleasing to the ear, and will challenge even the most seasoned player. A difficult piece, but definitely worth it!

Sonata for Trumpet and Piano was composed in the summer of 2008 while teaching at the International Music Camp on the border of North Dakota and Manitoba at the International Peace Garden. It was written for my good friend and former colleague Dr. Jim Stokes, Professor of Trumpet at Appalachian State University.

The Peace Garden is thousands of acres full of woodlands, lakes and open meadows. Living in that setting had a direct influence on the Sonata. The first movement symbolizes beginnings, the sunrise and start of each day. The second movement is the serenity and yet power of water, both lakes and streams that are in abundance at the Peace Garden. The inspiration for the third movement was the animals, mammals, birds and insects (and there were plenty of them) who created a chorus of sounds as they moved about the acres. This natural setting created a life affirming backdrop for the composition, one I hope comes through the music to you as the performer. Learn More
