ALIEN LOOP DE LOOPS for solo instrument and electronic recording by Howard J. Buss is a playful and capricious fantasy piece designed to appeal to a wide range of audiences. The title refers to both programmatic and technical elements in the composition. The composer envisioned a performer outside in an open area during an air show by an alien craft. During the opening section he/she is playing unaccompanied, but then is joined by the recording which contains sounds generated by traditional instruments as well as an "alien" voice, the spacecraft, and various electronic effects. Technically, the title refers to how the recording was made. It consists of numerous sound loops combined to form an imaginative and picturesque sonic tapestry. I originally came across Frank Gulino’s music a few years ago at one of the International Trombone Festivals. I quickly fell in love with his musical voice and compositional style. After switching to bass trombone a few years ago, I realized quickly how small the bass trombone solo repertoire truly is. There are staples in the repertoire, but due to the nature of a small pool of repertoire choices, I wanted to take this opportunity to form a consortium and collaborate with Frank. My hope is this new piece will become a modern staple of the repertoire. - Austin Pancner

"This beautiful, meditative work is designed to be performed in a concert venue or as a musical offering in a house of worship. Its reverent quality is enhanced by the rich sonority and organ-like quality of the large trombone ensemble. The musical language of Prayer is sophisticated, yet audience-friendly. It begins with a lyrical 12-tone melody that is symbolic of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. The dodecaphonic reference also relates to the instrumentation: From the pickup to measure 70 to the end, the twelve pitches of the opening melody are presented with each player assigned to one pitch. When performing this closing passage it is important that the 12 players shape the 12 separate pitches into one lyrical melody (as it was presented at the beginning of the piece by player one). This composition is accessible to amateur and high school-level players. It may be performed with ten tenor and two bass trombones. Parts 11 and 12 are specifically notated for bass trombones. If an additional bass trombone is available it may be used on part 6. Other parts easily playable on a bass trombone are 4, 5, and 10.
