Songs of the Forest – In Memory of Michael Carver (1965-2019)

The low brass community lost a great friend with the unexpected passing of bass trombonist Michael Carver in May of 2019. A longtime member of the Chattanooga Symphony and the faculties of both Dalton State College and Southern Adventist University, Mike was a gifted artist, a passionate educator, and a true friend to all who knew him. In addition to his love of family, music, and teaching, Mike had an abiding passion for nature and the outdoors. His enthusiasm for hiking, cycling, flying, and travel—like his sense of humor—was contagious.

Songs of the Forest, a new piece for solo bass trombone and trombone choir by composer Frank Gulino, captures Mike's love of the outdoors by evoking the feelings of solitude, wonderment, majesty, and joy experienced while venturing through the forest. This work will be premiered by the Washington Trombone Ensemble at the American Trombone Workshop, an event at which Mike had been a fixture for many years with the Edwards Instrument Company, in March of 2020.

Proceeds from this project will support the annual music scholarship that has been established in Mike's memory. While everyone will miss Mike's humor, artistry, and companionship, this scholarship fund will help ensure that part of Mike's musical legacy includes providing financial assistance to deserving students. Participation in this project is available at three levels:

Level 1: $40 contributors will be recognized in the score

Level 2: $60 contributors will be recognized in the score and receive a complete set of parts for Songs of the Forest in PDF, as well as a copy of Frank's Trombone Sonata No. 1: “The Journey,” also in PDF (available immediately after purchase)

Level 3: $80 contributors will receive all of the above benefits plus a signed hard copy score and set of parts for Songs of the Forest

The deadline to participate in this project is January 31, 2020.
