Joelle Wallach’s In a Dark Time (the eye begins to see) for horn and piano or chamber orchestra, was commissioned by the International Women’s Brass Conference for its opening concert of 2006. It explores the lyrical and expressive aspects of the Horn, and was premiered there by Laurel Bennert Ohlson, Associate Principle Horn of the National Symphony Orchestra. Like the Theodore Roethke poem form which the title is taken, the music explores the revealing, redemptive power of times of psychic dark. All three movements can be played in sequence or each movement can stand alone as its own brief lyrical statement.

In Rodin’s Garden was composed in the fall of 2015 for my friend and former colleague Dan Grabois, horn professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Music. While thoroughly enjoying a stroll through the Rodin museum in Paris the previous spring I thought to compose something for Dan, in part because his knowledge of French and Paris was so helpful in preparation for my visit. This short, simple work is meant to be peaceful, reflective and perhaps a bit melancholy; evoking the feeling one gets when viewing Rodin’s sculptures in that beautiful setting. It is a quiet respite for the performer as well as the audience and, as such, is intended to be used as an interlude, or perhaps an encore, on a program of larger, more complex works. Visiting a place like Rodin’s garden is a way of taking a little time out from life to reflect in a setting that is simple and lovely. It is my hope that this piece provides that same sort of “time out”.

Into the Hall of Valor for horn and piano by Howard J. Buss was composed for the 50th Anniversary of the International Horn Society. It was written for hornist Frank Lloyd and The United States Army Field Band for their performance at the IHS Conference hosted by Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. This composition is a tribute to soldiers recognized for great courage in the face of danger. The composer states, “About the time I learned that the U.S. Army Field Band would perform the premier, I was reading about the “Hall of Valor" located at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia. I was inspired to write a work as a salute to those who have been recognized therein, as well as soldiers honored at similar venues. The character of the music is heroic, majestic, and the solo horn adds significantly to this.“ Learn More
