  9. Duh Suite (Euphoniums)

    Composer: Self, Jim
    Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Euphonium
    Genre: Contemporary

    with Drums

    From the composer:

Duh Intro, is a fast contrapuntal piece with declamatory fanfares and a four-octave range. Then comes Duh Odds, a fast, relentless series of odd-meter measures with a variety of tom-toms providing a driving beat (don’t be surprised if you hear some Stravinsky). Movement three is a slow, jazzy ballad named Duh Fool Professors. The percussion accompaniment is all spacey metallic sounds (cymbals, triangles and the like), over wide-interval melodies in the tubas. Duh Blooze calls for lots of laid-back slippin’ and slidin’ and much trading of blues melodies and bass lines–while the drummer plays brushes. In Duh Yaz the tubas are called upon for some super acrobatics. After a scary intro, the group moves into a jazz/rock and samba feel for “the tune”. The middle section is a kind of development section with each tuba taking the limelight, after which there is a return to the tune and a fade ending. The finale is, of course, called Duh KoDa (an acronym based on the initials of the soloists). The music of this movement returns some of the fast scales from the first movement and more wild, declamatory material for all. Like all the movements, it emphasizes interesting and varied rhythmic patterns. The drums are to be played at a drum set by a musician who has jazz and rock “chops” and is encouraged to be creative with the part.

  12. Gypsy Earrings

    Composer: Farah, Ardeshir
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Bass, Euphonium, Percussion, Piano
    Genre: Contemporary

with Piano, Bass Guitar and Drums

    From the arranger:

Gypsy Earrings was originally an acoustic guitar duet recorded by the famous duo Strunz & Farah. Their work is extremely unique in the sense that both members of this duo come from opposite sides of the world. Jorge Strunz is a native of Costa Rice, while Ardeshir Farah hails from Iran, thus giving their music an amazing mix of Latin American and Middle Eastern flavors, of which Gypsy Earrings is no exception. Strunz & Farah are known for their catchy melodies and extreme virtuosity through improvisation.

    - Ryan McGeorge

Gypsy Earrings is by nationalistic composer, Ardeshir Farah. This setting was done by Ryan McGeorge, and is for two euphoniums and rhythm section (bass, piano, drums). The piece is a lot of fun to play and to listen to – full of jiving melodies and running lines.

  13. Invictus

    Composer: Robertson, Gail
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Electronics, Euphonium, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary

Invictus was composed in February 2023 for Jessica Payne. The work begins with the sounds of marimba, conga drums, shakers, and windchimes to set the mood. There is a slight dissonance to create a gentle tension that serves as a symbol of pain and the strength needed to keep “going on.” The role of the second euphonium is to serve as a support to the other part (the role of a teacher). The trading passages that cross each other are a symbol of conversation and teaching (the second euphonium always goes first and “leads the way). The middle section has powerful independent melodic lines with musical advice such as “lead on” and “on a mission.” These melodies represent growth and power as the tension is in the past. The work ends with a tiny hint of tension to symbolize upcoming change and hopes that the tension will soon be forever gone.  – Gail Robertson   Invictus is a poem written by English author William Earnest Henley in 1875. This poem was authored while Henley was in the hospital after a radical surgery to save his leg following a diagnosis of tubercular arthritis. The poem has themes of strength and courage in the face of great adversity. Dr. Gail Robertson has been a force of good and encouragement in my life since I moved to Arkansas to study with her. When I approached Dr. Robertson about composing a duet for us to premiere at my graduate recital, this poem was one of the first themes that popped into my mind. I am proud to be where I am today and thankful for her guiding light – Jessica Payne

  16. Passage

    Composer: Robertson, Gail
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Electronics, Euphonium, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary
Passage was composed in February 2023 for Robertson’s last Florida student Matthew Holbrook. When Matthew asked me to compose something lyrical for his Senior Recital, I didn’t hesitate a second since he had moved all the way from Florida to Arkansas to study with me! Passage is sort of a story of Matthew’s path since arriving in Arkansas. It begins with two slightly conflicting ideas followed by a unison melody that is symbolic of our lessons and friendship. New melodic lines speak to each other as if having a conversation and later intertwine and cross over each other. I somehow managed to overlap two wonderful hymns in this work. A slightly altered All Things Bright and Beautiful and Jean Sibelius’ theme from Finlandia also known as Catharina von Schlegel’s German hymn Be Still My Soul. Later the work presses on and is symbolic of someone on a mission to graduate and soon get married. There are hints of wedding bells, a marching band and a tiny hint of Barbara York’s A Caged Bird. – Gail Robertson Learn More
