Dr. Michael Stewart holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Music Composition
from University of South Carolina, a Master of Arts degree in Trumpet Performance
from Eastern Illinois University, and a Bachelor of Music degree on Jazz
Studies from the University of Akron (OH). Although he primarily writes
for brass ensembles, his compositions also cover a far-reaching range of
styles and geners.
The summer of 1997 saw the recording and release of his first compact
disc, entitled "Chorales & Imitations," a collection of chamber
brass music. Featured as performers are members of the Chicago Brass Choir.
Along with performances of his works at many colleges, public schools, and
churches, Dr. Stewart has also been selected for recognition at conferences
and in composition contests. In 1991, his Landscape I, for solo trumpet in
Eb and wind ensemble, received first prize in the San Diego State University
Composition Contest and in 1994 his Set Arrangements, for trumpet quartet and
piano, was premiered at the annual International Trumpet Guild conference.
Dr. Stewart maintains an active teaching and performing career in the
Chicago area. He currently performs the Chicago Brass Choir and its
Quintet, big bands, and as a freelance classical soloist. He was
recently on the
faculty of the Chicago Musical college of Roosevelt University, teaching
music theory and sight-singing, and teaches privately in the Chicago
suburbs.
