  2. Crossroads

    Composer: Balmages, Brian
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Euphonium, Piano
    Genre: Contemporary

    with Piano

Crossroads seeks to explore the various personalities of the euphonium. The first movement, High Road, focuses on the more artistic side of the instrument. The harmonies and textures are more contemporary and the melodic lines are more angular. The entire movement is based on the opening three-note motif presented by the soloist. The second movement, Low Road, explores the carefree and boisterous side of the instrument. It is highly rhythmical and covers a wide range of styles including bebop. Crossroads was commissioned by the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Festival. It was premiered at the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp with Lance LaDuke on euphonium and Dr. Joseph Manfredo, conductor. Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Euphonium, Piano
    Genre: Classical

    with Piano

Antonio Bazzini (1818-1897) was a virtuosic 19th century violinist. The violin scherzo “Dance of the Goblins,” or “La Ronde des Lutins,” Op. 25, is his best known work. The piece has been transcribed and performed on a number of instruments, owing to its melodic appeal and virtuosic challenge. The version presented here, is fairly true to the original work. The performer should therein find an incentive to improve flexibility, double tonguing, range, and showmanship, while focusing on the melody throughout.
