Henry Howey is Professor of Music at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. As a scholar, he has documented the beginnings of instrumental music education in his translation of Daniel Speer's (1636-1707) Musical Quatrefoil (1697) which was his doctoral dissertation. Later, he used Speer's three novels to document (in an article in the Historic Brass Society Journal) the life and times of the secretive Stadtpfeiffer whose great skills inspired J.S. Bach and others to create music that challenges even today.

Spurred by a question from a librarian, he had returned to the repertoire several solo works by the Italian composer and bandmaster, Amilcare Ponchielle. The Concerto per flicornobasso has, since its modern premiere in 1994, became a standard of the repertoire and used as a 'test piece' by several solo competitions.

Ponchielli's Fantasia for solo conrnet on Verdi's La Traviata was premiered (with piano) in Fall 1996. His revival of the young Belgian composer, Guillaume Lekeu's, Introduction et Adagio for euphonium obbligato and band returns to the repertoire a work of the exceptional beauty and expression.
