Barbara York has agreed to compose (and is already working on) four new pieces during the summer and fall of 2007:
- Sonata for Tuba with Piano
- Sonata for Euphonium with Piano
- Sonata for Horn with Piano
- Suite for Horn or Euphonium and Tuba with Piano
The fee for commissioning all four pieces is $3000.00. To make this happen, we formed an unusual consortium, in that individuals were invited to participate, along with BVD Press and Cimarron Music Press. Here is how the consortium worked:
- $1000.00 from individuals
- $1000.00 from an anonymous donor
- $500.00 from BVD Press
- $500.00 engraving and printing from Cimarron Music Press
All participants in this consortium will be listed on the back page of the score for each piece and will be mailed copies of the pieces they have contributed to, as they are completed.
The goal of $1000.00 from individuals has been reached, so the option of participating is closed. These new pieces will be added to the Cimarron Music Press catalog soon.
One of the goals of this and possible future commissions is to encourage Barbara and other composers to write more new music for the Brass instrument family.

 Barbara York has been working in both Canada and the U.S. for over 35 years as a concert accompanist, choral and theatrical music director and composer. Her score and lyrics for the Canadian musical Colette won a Dora Mavor Moore Award in 1981. She has received commissions from two Canadian symphony orchestras, the Boise State University Symphonic Winds and the BSU Symphony Orchestra, plus numerous private groups and soloists in both the US and Canada.
She has presented pieces at three World Saxophone Congresses and at the 2003 International Double Reed Symposium. Her 50-minute scripted, children’s piece, A Butterfly in Time, was recently recorded to CD and was nominated for a Juno Award in 2006. Her first tuba piece, Sea Dreams, was on the required repertoire list for the International Tuba Euphonium Association’s 2004 Young Artists Competition. Conversations, for euphonium and alto saxophone, won the Harvey Phillips Award for euphonium in chamber music at the 2006 International Tuba – Euphonium Congress.
As an accompanist, Barbara has played at universities and concert venues throughout the United States and Canada, has recorded for CBC Radio, and has premiered numerous works for other composers at International congresses. Barbara lives in Kansas City, Missouri.
